Why Cant We Just Be Friends?

(Kiara wants to play with Kovu, but Kovu is now involved in Zira's plan, and knows he can't see her again until they are older.)



{Scene: Kovu has just snuck away from Nuka while the rest of the outlander lions are hunting. He is thinking of heading back when he hears something behind him in the grass.}

(Kovu listens intently, clearly hearing something coming, he ducks down just as it leaps over him.)

(Kiara leaps over Kovu and lands with her face in the dirt.)

Kiara:(standing up and spitting out dirt) Kovu!

Kovu: Kiara!? (looks around and lowers his voice) What are you doing here?

Kiara: Well, I came here to see if I could find you.

Kovu: You shouldn't be here, you'll get us both in big trouble.

Kiara: Not if no one sees us. Come on, don't you want to play?

Kovu:(turns away from Kiara) I got yelled at when my mother got me back home last time.

Kiara: My Dad didn't yell at me.

Kovu: You're lucky.

Kiara: He just told me not to come here or see you anymore.

Kovu: (Turns head to look at her) Well, that message seemed to sink in.

Kiara: (laughs) Come on, Kovu. Let's just play!

Kovu: You don't get it, it's not just that. It's...

Kiara: No, I don't get it. (leads into song)


Why can't you just play with me? It's not as hard as you see it to be,

Unless I did something to offend, why can't we just be friends?


Kovu: No, you didn't do anything!


I know that you don't really care, but our parents do as you're aware.

Kiara: Don't you think that's a little unfair?


Kovu: I guess...


We could always keep it secret, we could just pretend,

So, why can't we just be friends?


Kovu: What do you mean, "secret"?

Kiara: We could be secret friends.

Kovu: What, you mean sneak away and meet here?

Kiara: Exactly!


You could could show me how to fight, it'd be so fun!

Kovu:(smirks) You'd never beat me, I bet you'd cry and run.

Kiara: Don't you see the fun that we could spend?

Why can't we just be friends?


Kovu: Maybe...no, it couldn't work.

Kiara: Why not?

Kovu: Eventually someone will see us and we'll get caught. Do you really want to risk getting in loads of trouble? I mean,


I'm not trying to bring you down, but sooner or later, we will be found.

To take that risk I don't intend...

(Kiara looks down, saddened.)

But, I'll still be your friend.


(they both smile)

Kiara: I guess I just got carried away. I just kinda wanted to see you again.

Kovu: Uhh...we will, don't worry.

Kiara: Really? Are you sure?

Kovu:...I guarantee it.


Both: If we can't play together, that'll be ok,

We'll see each other again, someday.

So even though for know it ends...

we can always stay good friends...


Kovu: You better go now.

Kiara: Ok (she begins to leave) See you?

Kovu: See you.

(she exits, Kovu turns to go the opposite way.) (pause)



I know Mom's plan depends on me,

I know it will help our family.

(looks back in Kiara's direction)

But I can't help feeling a little bad,

She's the first non-pride friend I've ever had.

(sighs)

Kovu: You'll always be my friend.

(Kovu exits)
